From February 17th until March 3rd, the ERC-ARTIVISM team is in Nice to follow the carnival défilé. By filming, interviewing and participating in the cortèges, the researchers explore the carnival parades and the Bataille de Fleurs. In a highly secured circuit, 17 floats representing the carnival theme – i.e. the space for the 2018 edition –, music groups and street artists parade for 90 minutes on the Massena square and on the Promenade des Anglais, in the center of the city. Throughout the years, the carnival défilé has followed different itineraries: it passed through e.g. the Vieux Nice (the old town), the Avenue Jean Medecin, the Place Massena, the Avenue Félix Faure. After 2016, the year of the terrorist attack in Nice, no event was organized on the Promenade, at least until this year, and security measures have been introduced and reinforced in the occasion of public events ever since. In the case of carnival, the parade takes place in an enclosed area surrounded by panels, so that every access is controllable and controlled.
