Months of patient and shared work are necessary to give form to the grosses-têtes – typical character of the carnival in Nice –, that will be parading in a carnival in Nice’s countryside. From November until late March, a group of people gathers weekly to participate to carnival ateliers lead by a former carnavalier, who explains us materials and techniques used in the past official carnivals of Nice. Nowadays, new substances and methods are employed to build characters and floats animating the official event. During the ateliers, we have therefore the chance to build and paint our own grosse-tête. For through the participation in the ateliers the creative process is emphasized, it is possible to explore how creativity is mobilized and socio-political claims become materialized in the forms of e.g. masks, costumes, floats.
