On the 24th March, the carnival ateliers participate at the Carnaval de Printemps organized in Châteauneuf-Villevieille, a village in Nice’s countryside. The grosses-têtes previously assembled are carried around the village accompanied by music played with hand-made instruments created out of cougourdons – a cucurbit.
Participants and organizers of the event stress the authenticity of this carnival, for it is made by people for people – consciously recalling Goethe’s 1789 Das römische Carneval – and thus recovering a carnivalesque spirit that is perceived as being lost in Nice official carnival.
